The first expedition into charcoal could not have gone better. For years, when people have seen earlier nude works, they’ve always assumed charcoal off the bat and will act surprised when I tell them acrylic. Embarrassingly, I now see why. The ability to repeatedly blend and layer day after day without fret of a drying medium has been remarkable, no pun intended. My hand seems to glide across the canvas with ease and edit smaller details without the threat of accidentally overindulging in pigment.
For now, it seems the nude portraits in acrylic will be the last of their kind. It’s tough to think I’d go back to a less efficient and enjoyable medium when charcoal is right at my fingertips. We’ll see what the times bring, but I have a good feeling about this.
