About the ‘No River Twice’ Series

Splatters in color? It was only a matter of time! With the unbleached series locked exclusively into black paint and raw canvas, the ‘Moments in Time’ series allows me to practice my favorite splatter technique casually while on full display. Through practicing with only black paint, I was able to pick up on quite a few tricks, but needed a place to implement them. Exploring colors was my only option. I’ve found that even with repeated types of strokes, a new color will provide a voice for the work almost independent of shape. It’s also how the series got its name. I felt the sentiment of these paintings echoed the ancient quote wisely handed down from Hericlitus, “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.”

I hope you can feel his words in these paintings. When I started the series, It was the splatters that I was after. To me, it’s the most fun I can have while painting, and I wanted to do it often. Mixing some paint and letting it fly can create shapes and textures impossible to do with planned brush strokes, while arguably more beautiful. After each one is done, I find myself sitting and staring for hours at each interpretation before me. It’s a technique I couldn’t just leave sitting on the shelf, but I was worried that soon I’d run out of colors or shape ideas for the canvas. It was then I was reminded of the quote and set my mind at ease. I knew, that if even accidentally, I returned to the series in a few years with the same color and stroke in mind, the work would take on a life of its own and present a result entirely unique. I also knew I had a million colors to get through before that even became a problem, so the series was born.

Each color has its own personality, speaking for itself long before your mind even registers the shape. In some works, they battle dominance of the canvas, each shouting out that their contribution is more sublime. In others, they curl together seamlessly, like wafts of a Sunday dinner baking in the kitchen as the sun dips below the horizon. I hope you enjoy.
