Drop #25
Drop #25
The Drop series is my daring attempt to capture a few infinitesimally small and uniquely abstract moments off-guard in the fatefully continuous real world.
Stunningly vibrant and subtly emotional, each drop of the cube exists in a world entirely its own. One frame at a time, unknowingly snatched from time, is trapped forever by the laws of physics, allowing no two drops to ever be the same. For a brief moment, the sides of the cube, the bubbles, and the reflections all work in tandem to bend the light perfectly toward the eye, but with each passing millisecond, the scene is forced to change. The bubbles race upward while the cube falls below. The moment passes and what’s left is a combination of vivid colors and motion frozen in time. It’s from this physical base in reality that I think the series truly generates its beauty.
The series began as purely a question. The result of honest and naive curiosity, really. The cube had been sitting on my windowsill for a month attempting to bask in what little winter sunlight was able to reach my dimly lit basement studio. For only a few minutes every day, right at noon, a sharp ray would shine on each surface and scatter throughout the room, creating hundreds of individual patterns that were seemingly alive on the wall. Each day, I’d look forward to those couple precious minutes of sunshine, arguably coming to plan my day around it. That is, until I sat back in my chair and wondered
‘What would this look like underwater?’
A few very needed revisions of a lighting contraption later and a vision began to take hold. The results? Nothing short of breathtaking. Not only does each directly visible face provide its own original hue, but colors invisible to the camera can be seen in the reflections of unsuspecting bubbles passing by. These bubbles, in combination with the large blocks of color, really set the mood of each frame. Ranging from frantic to reserved, each addition only adds to the growing voice of the series. To honor the individual voice of each drop, the series will only be available as single editions of each print. The print you collect will be as unique as you! I hope you enjoy!
